What is gear development?

Development is the distance your bike travels in metres for one complete revolution of the pedals. It depends on your gear ratio and wheel size. Higher development means more distance per pedal revolution but requires more effort. Typical road bike development ranges from 2m (climbing gear) to 9m (highest gear).

What gear ratio is best for bikepacking?

For bikepacking with a loaded bike, you want a lowest gear ratio of around 0.7-1.0:1 for climbing steep hills. A 1x setup with a 38-40T chainring and a cassette going to 42-51T provides excellent range. Ensure your lowest gear can handle steep climbs with luggage.

What cadence should I ride at?

Most efficient cycling is at 80-100 rpm. For endurance riding and bikepacking, 80-90 rpm is comfortable. Grinding at low cadence (under 60 rpm) puts more strain on your knees. Choose gears that let you maintain a comfortable cadence on the terrain.
