Proper nutrition and hydration are critical for outdoor performance and safety. A day of strenuous hiking with a loaded pack can burn 3,000 to 5,000 calories, far more than a typical day at home. Running out of food or water in remote areas is a serious safety risk.

Water requirements increase significantly with exercise, heat and altitude. The general guideline is 2-4 litres per day for moderate hiking, but this can double in hot weather or at high altitude. Water weighs 1kg per litre, so carrying too much adds significant pack weight.

Gas canister stoves are the most popular choice for UK backpacking. A standard 230g canister provides roughly 35-45 minutes of burn time, enough for approximately 12-15 boils of 500ml of water. Our fuel canister calculator helps you work out exactly how much fuel to carry.
