Hiking Planning and Trail Calculations

Proper planning makes hiking safer and more enjoyable. Knowing how long a route will take, how many calories you'll burn, and where to rest are all important factors — especially on longer routes in UK mountain areas where daylight hours can be limited.

Naismith's rule, developed in 1892 by Scottish mountaineer William Naismith, remains the standard for estimating hiking time: allow 5km per hour on the flat, plus 1 minute for every 10 metres of ascent. Our calculators apply this formula along with modern corrections for descent, terrain difficulty and fitness level.

Calorie burn while hiking depends on body weight, pack weight, distance, elevation gain and terrain. A typical day hike of 15km with 600m of ascent carrying a 10kg pack will burn approximately 2,500-3,000 calories for an average adult. Our calorie burn calculator uses the Pandolf equation for loaded marching.
