For an average-height adult (170cm) on flat ground, approximately 1,400 steps per kilometre. Shorter people take more steps, taller people fewer. On rough terrain or steep uphills, stride length shortens and the step count increases significantly.

How is stride length calculated?

Stride length is approximately 41.5% of your height for normal walking. So a 170cm person has a base stride of about 70.5cm. This is then adjusted for terrain (rough ground shortens your stride) and gradient (uphills shorten, downhills lengthen).

How accurate is step counting for distance?

Step counting is a rough estimate — typically within 10-20% accuracy. Variations in terrain, fatigue, load, and individual gait make it imprecise. For navigation, pace counting on measured ground is more reliable than general step counting.
