What is a float plan?

A float plan is a document left with a responsible person detailing your paddling route, expected times, group members, and emergency contacts. If you do not check in by your latest ETA, the contact person can alert emergency services. Always file a float plan for any kayaking trip, even short ones.

What paddling speed should I use for planning?

Average touring kayak speed is 4-6 km/h for recreational paddlers. Experienced paddlers can sustain 6-8 km/h. Sea kayakers typically plan on 4-5 km/h to account for wind, waves and tide. Always plan conservatively — it is better to arrive early than to be overdue.

How much buffer time should I add?

Add at least 30% to your estimated paddling time as a safety buffer. This accounts for headwinds, tiredness, capsizing, navigation errors, and unexpected conditions. In tidal waters or exposed coastline, add 50% or more. Your latest ETA should be the time after which someone calls for help.

What should I include in a float plan?

Include: route description with launch and landing points, number of paddlers, kayak descriptions, expected departure and arrival times, latest ETA, emergency contact numbers, nearest coastguard station, equipment carried (VHF radio, flares, etc.), and any medical conditions in the group.
