How do I choose the right paddle length?

Paddle length depends primarily on your height and kayak width. Taller paddlers and wider kayaks need longer paddles. A touring kayaker of average height (170-178cm) in a standard touring kayak typically uses a 220-230cm paddle. The right length allows a comfortable, efficient stroke without excessive reaching.

Does paddling style affect paddle length?

Yes. High-angle (aggressive) paddlers use shorter paddles for a more vertical stroke close to the kayak. Low-angle (relaxed touring) paddlers use longer paddles that sweep further from the boat. Racing paddles are the shortest, while recreational paddles are the longest for a given height.

What paddle material should I choose?

Fibreglass paddles offer a good balance of weight, performance and price. Carbon fibre is lightest but most expensive — worth it for long touring trips.
