How do I measure river surface speed?

The simplest method is the float test: drop a small stick or orange into the current and time how long it takes to travel a measured distance (e.g. 10 metres). Speed = distance / time. Take multiple readings in different parts of the river and average them.

A cumec (cubic metre per second, m³/s) is the standard unit for river flow rate. It represents one cubic metre of water passing a point every second. UK river gauging stations report flow in cumecs. The Environment Agency publishes real-time flow data for most major UK rivers.

Why is average speed less than surface speed?

Water near the riverbed moves slower due to friction. In a typical river, average velocity across the full cross-section is 60-85% of surface velocity, depending on bed roughness. Smooth sandy beds allow faster flow (85%), while boulder-strewn beds create more friction (60%).

What flow rate is safe for kayaking?

This depends heavily on the river and your experience. As a general guide, gentle recreational paddling is comfortable at average speeds under 1 m/s. Above 2 m/s, the river becomes challenging with potential hazards. Always check local conditions and Environment Agency flood warnings before paddling.
