How do I calibrate my pace count?

Walk a measured 100m distance (use a tape measure or a known distance between two landmarks) three times and count your double paces (every time the same foot hits the ground). Average the three counts. Most people take 60-70 double paces per 100m on flat ground.

Why use double paces?

Double paces (counting every left or right footfall) are easier to count than single steps because the numbers are smaller. Counting every step to 500 is harder than counting to 250. Many people use ranger beads (pace counter beads) to track hundreds of metres.

How does terrain affect pace count?

Rough terrain, steep slopes and snow all shorten your stride, requiring more paces per 100m. On rough ground, add 10-20%. On steep uphill, add 20-30%. In deep snow, add 30-40%. Calibrate separately for different terrain types if accuracy is critical.
