When do I need a bear canister?

Bear canisters are required in many wilderness areas in North America, including parts of Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Denali. Even where not required, they are recommended in bear country to protect food and reduce human-bear conflicts.

How much food fits in a bear canister?

A standard BV500 (10.6L) holds roughly 5-6 days of food for one person using dehydrated meals. The smaller BV450 (7.2L) holds about 3-4 days. Actual capacity depends on how well you pack and what foods you carry.

Can I use an Ursack instead of a hard canister?

Ursacks are lighter and more packable but are not approved in all areas that require canisters. Check local regulations. Ursacks protect food from bears but do not prevent crushing, so pack fragile items carefully.

How do I pack a bear canister efficiently?

Remove excess packaging, use zip-lock bags, fill gaps with snack bars and small items. Pack items you need first on top. Some hikers put the canister in a stuff sack for easier carrying outside the pack.

What about toiletries and scented items?

Anything with a scent must go in the canister: toothpaste, sunscreen, lip balm, hand sanitiser, and any scented items. This reduces your available food space, so factor in an extra 0.5-1L for toiletries.
