Shelter and Sleep Systems for Camping

A good night's sleep is essential for enjoying multi-day outdoor trips. Your shelter system, including tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad, needs to protect you from rain, wind and cold while being light enough to carry.

Hammock camping has grown significantly in the UK. The ideal hammock hang uses a 30-degree strap angle, which creates a comfortable lay angle and keeps the hammock at a good height. Our hammock hang calculator works out the exact tree distance and strap lengths you need.

Sleeping pad R-value measures thermal resistance — the higher the R-value, the more insulation from the cold ground. For UK three-season camping, an R-value of 3-4 is typically sufficient. For winter camping, aim for R5 or above. Stacking pads adds their R-values together.
