How long should tent guy lines be?

Each guy line should be long enough to reach from the attachment point to a peg at a 45-degree angle, plus 50cm for a tensioner and knots. For a typical tent with 1.2m high attachment points, each line needs about 2.5m. In storm conditions, extend to 3m+ per line for wider peg spacing.

What angle should guy lines be at?

Ideally 45 degrees from the ground (peg at same distance from tent as the attachment height). In windy conditions, a lower angle (wider spacing) provides more stability but uses more cord. In sheltered spots, a steeper angle saves space on tight pitches.

What cord should I use for guy lines?

For hiking, 2-3mm reflective cord is the standard choice — visible at night, light and strong enough. Dyneema cord is the ultralight option at half the weight. Paracord is heavy but very strong. Avoid elastic shock cord for main guy lines as it allows too much movement in wind.

Do I need to use all guy line points?

In calm conditions, you can skip some guy points. However, in any wind or rain, use all available guy lines — they dramatically improve tent stability and prevent fabric flapping. On exposed mountain pitches, every guy point should be used and properly tensioned.
