What size tarp do I need for one person?

For a solo A-frame shelter, a 3m x 2.5m tarp is the minimum. A 3m x 3m tarp gives more protection and versatility. For two people, step up to 3m x 3.5m or larger. In stormy conditions, go one size larger than minimum for better coverage and wind protection.

What is the best tarp configuration?

The A-frame is the most versatile — it sheds wind and rain well and is easy to pitch. A lean-to gives more headroom on one side but less weather protection. A C-fly (one side lower) balances protection and headroom. In fair weather, a flat tarp provides maximum covered area but no wind protection.

Is a tarp better than a tent?

Tarps are lighter, cheaper, more versatile and better ventilated than tents. However, they offer no insect protection and less weather security. In the UK, tarps work well from autumn to spring when midges are not active. In Scottish midge season (June-September), a tent with mesh is far more comfortable.

What tarp material should I choose?

Silnylon (silicone-coated nylon) is the most popular choice — light, strong and affordable. DCF (Dyneema Composite Fabric) is lighter but much more expensive. Polycotton tarps are heavier but breathe well and reduce condensation. For UK hill use, silnylon with 3000mm+ HH rating is the practical choice.
