Why does my tent get condensation?

Each person exhales approximately 40g of moisture per hour while sleeping. In a sealed tent, this moisture hits the cold flysheet and condenses into water droplets. Factors that increase condensation: cold temperatures, high humidity, more occupants, wet gear inside, and poor ventilation.

How do I reduce tent condensation?

Open all vents and door panels as wide as weather allows. Keep wet gear in the vestibule. Never cook inside. Pitch in a slight breeze rather than a dead-calm hollow. Wipe the inner flysheet with a small microfibre cloth in the morning. Some condensation is inevitable — a double-wall tent helps keep drips off you.

Is a single-wall or double-wall tent better for condensation?

Double-wall tents are far better for condensation management. The flysheet collects condensation away from you, while the inner mesh allows airflow. Single-wall tents (common in ultralight designs) put condensation right next to your sleeping bag. In the UK climate, double-wall tents are strongly recommended.

Does tent colour affect condensation?

Indirectly, yes. Dark-coloured tents absorb more solar heat, which helps dry condensation in the morning sun. Light-coloured tents stay cooler but dry slower. Green and brown tents (common in the UK) are middle ground. The main factors are ventilation design and occupancy, not colour.
